Episode 5- The Beast Awakens

From the mind of Lauren Glancesherlock

To celebrate our first gym victory, we had a little party back at the room. We spent most of the night binge snacking and watching Yu-Gi-Oh: The Abridged Series. Saff and Danni especially enjoyed the show, even though they didn’t know was Yu-Gi-Oh was, and kept quoting their favorite jokes. Carmen and Piper had a little girl-bonding time, and Mr. Flutters cuddled up next to the egg until he fell asleep. Alistair kept to himself for the most part, writing away in that book of his. One of these days I need to steal that from him and read what he’s been putting in there.

Before we left the city, Viola’s sister Alexa flagged me down and gave me an Exp Share in honor of my first gym badge. She explained that when I had it turned on, it would give all of my Pokémon extra Exp after a battle.

“Well to hell with that!” I told Alistair after Alexa had left us. “I’m keeping this thing off.”

“What?! I’m surprised. I thought you would leap at the chance to have that kind of advantage.”

“Yeah, but to have all of you guys benefiting from a battle that only one of you fights feels like cheating to me. I’ll keep it in my back pocket in case we need it later.”

But then… it happened not long after we had started traveling down Route 4: Mr. Flutters evolved for a final time.

It was magical. His fluffy, white body laminated itself in a brilliant white light. For a while, I couldn’t see him because it was so bright, but when the light faded, he was a beautiful butterfly~! His wings were a bright sapphire blue speckled with white dots, almost like snowflakes.

“Yay!” I pulled my Vivillon into a hug, which was really awkward maneuvering around those wings. “I’m so proud of you!” Mr. Flutters squeaked happily and flew around to the different teammates. A chorus of congratulations came from my Pokémon, and he squeaked in reply as he reached each of them. The last ‘mon he went to was Saff, who offered up his paw for a high-five. Mr. Flutters didn’t take it, but suddenly seemed extremely entranced with Saff’s face. He moved in close until they were inches apart and fixed his eyes onto Saff’s.

“Uh… okay.” Saff backed away. Mr. Flutters followed forward. The Pikachu laughed uncomfortably. “Hahah. Okay Mr. Flutters, that’s enough. Um, Lauren? Little help? He’s being weird.”

“Mr. Flutters, get over here. You can ride on my head if you want.”

The Vivillon obliged silently, but he flew backwards to me, never taking his eyes off Saff. Even when he landed on my head, Saff was staring at him with a worried expression.

“He’s still looking at me.”

“Well, ignore him. Maybe he’ll stop.”

Alistair chuckled. “I rather like this new Mr. Flutters. He makes the rat uncomfortable.”

“Hey, that’s not funny you stupid limey!”

“Miss Lauren, perhaps it wasn’t the best idea for him to watch that show. I believe it is beginning to take a toll on his frail, little mind.”

“Hey!” Saff’s cheeks began to spark. “Don’t forget that little secret of yours I’m keeping! I can blurt it out at any time!”

“What secret?” I asked.

“It is none of your business, human.”

“What did you say to me, fancy pants?!”

I was ignored. Saff puffed out his chest and marched himself over to Alistair.

“I told you before that I didn’t have any beef with you, but if you’re gonna insult me like this then we’ve got beef!”

Alistair held up his cane like a sword. “Insults are but a minor misdoing compared to what I’ve gone through!”

“What are you two talked about?!” I demanded.

Carmen flapped her wings urgently. “Guys, stop this!”

“Nah, forget that!” Danni said eagerly. “Fight! Fight! Fight!”

More sparks flew out of Saff’s face as he and Alistair literally butted heads. “You’d have to be stupid to pick a fight with me! You’ve got a major type disadvantage, you old fuddy!”

“Well this old fuddy knows a thing or two about how to handle an unruly electric type!” The bubbles on Alistair’s back flared out so that his size seemed to have doubled.

Now, I seriously can’t explain this next part just yet. Why it happened exactly, I don’t know. Maybe it was because the plot has changed, but there was a voice… coming from somewhere in my head… instructing me.

“Make the mouse electrocute the frog.”

“Saff,” I said robotically and involuntarily. “Thundershock.”

“What?!” Carmen flew up to me and hovered in front of my face. “Lauren, what’s wrong with you?”

“Tell the mouse kill the frog.”

“Saff, I command you to destroy Alistair.”

Alistair stopped and stared at me. “I beg your pardon? Whoa!” He ran in circles, dodging the barrage of Thundershocks that were being sent his way. Saff didn’t cease firing for a moment.

Desperately, Carmen pecked at my head to try and get my attention. “Lauren! Lauren, you have to snap out of this or Alistair is going to die!”

I wanted to listen to her, I really did, but I couldn’t hear her… over the laughing. There was laughter- evil, manipulative, cruel- everywhere. In my head and all around me.

“Danni, help me!” Carmen screamed.

“I-I…” Danni was watching us with a look of terror on her face. She stepped back like she was ready to run away. “I don’t know what’s going on!”

“They must destroy each other.”

Saff had finally hit his target. Alistair crashed to the ground and his cane flew out of his hand. He grabbed his arm where the damage had been done. I watched as Saff approached, readying his final and most powerful blow. He’d do it, too. Because I told him to. Because the Beast told us to. I grinned with satisfaction, but inside I was screaming for the fighting to stop.

“The power of Mew compels you!!!”

A strange voice pierced through the noise. For a moment, the laughter quieted. I stumbled forward, and holding my head. Then I noticed it was much, much lighter. Where was Mr. Flutters?

I turned around, and there he was: Mr. Flutters staring at the scene with strange, gleeful expression. And he was laughing. It was the first audible noise I’d heard from him other than all those unintelligible little squeaks. It was the same evil laughter I had heard in my head. It was coming from my adorable, innocent Mr. Flutters?!

But then… the more I looked into those bright, happy eyes… the more I saw…

“I will devour the souls of your unborn children.”

“………Oh you are so boxed.”

Omniscient Narrator!

Most of the team sat silently on the edge of a fountain, except for Alistair, who was relaxing his muscles in the water. Lauren and Danni had gone back to Santalune City to put Mr. Flutters away in his own special box in the PC. Saff stared at the ground with his ears lowered. He opened his mouth a couple times to say something to Alistair, but he just couldn’t find the words. Carmen put a wing around him.

“Go on. I’m going to make you both apologize to each other, but perhaps you should start.”

“But what do I say?”

“Just start talking. You’ll find something.”

Saff sighed. “Well, I guess this a good warm up for when I have to explain this to Piper. Okay.” Carmen left him alone while he turned around to face Alistair. The Froakie had removed his monocle and top hat and was floating peacefully in the water.

“Hey uh, Alistair? Sorry about what happened back there. I mean, I know I was possessed and all, but I was ready to kill you.”

“As was I.” Alistair admitted as he stood up. The water came up to his chest. “Such a strange occurrence, this is. I’ve never come across anything like this.”

“I’m beginning to wish we’d let Danni kick the crap out of him the other day when she had the chance. Anyway, I guess this is two things I owe you now, huh?”

“I’m certain we’ll find a way for you to pay me back.”

“And I’m sorry for everything I said back there. But it wasn’t really me talking since we were both possessed by Mr. Flutters.”

“Maybe you were. I meant everything I said.”

“Wait, what?”

“Hey guys, we’re back.”

Lauren and Danni appearance ended their conversation. For once, their trainer looked genuinely apologetic.

“Yeah… so it turns out Mr. Flutters was evil. In fact, he may very well have been the demon from The Exorcist. Sorry about that, guys.”

“That whole thing was freaky!” Danni spat. “We’re never having a bug type on this team again!”

“It really is a shame, though,” said Alistair as he exited the fountain. “I wasn’t lying when I said I was growing fond of him.”

“How’s your arm?”

“Better. I’m sure it will heal completely in a couple short days.”

“What I don’t understand is who stopped him.” Carmen put in. “I heard this voice. Didn’t it say something about the power of Mew?”

“Yeah, I heard it too.” Lauren sat down on the edge of the fountain. “It was so freaking weird. I mean, I don’t mind interesting subplots, but damn. I was really scared.”

“Psh! I wasn’t!” boasted Danni as she sat on her haunches. “I stayed calm the whole time.”

“Well from where I was watching, you looked pretty scared.”

Everyone paused, except Lauren who had not understood. They recognized the voice as the same one as before. It was quiet and small, but very clear without a hint of irony.

“Alright,” Saff looked around. “Who said that?”

“Oh sorry. I’m very small, so you probably don’t see me.” A red flower rose up from the ground as though it were hovering. Riding it was a very small, adorable Pokémon. She was white with a gold ring around her head. She seemed to be maneuvering the flower by gripping the style and moving it about.

Lauren’s jaw dropped. “She’s… so… cute! Hello, little one. Where did you come from?”

“I think she’s the one who saved us from Mr. Flutters,” Carmen guessed.

“Is she a fairy?” Saff asked.

“Yes I am, for both of what you said,” the fairy said quietly. “I don’t know why I did that, though. I’ve never done it before. It was strange, and I was really scared the whole time. Something inside me just told me to do it, so I pointed my flower at the Vivillon and I said… well, I don’t remember what I said.”

“What’s especially strange is that Lauren understood her.” Alistair added as he put on his monocle and hat.

“Yes, but I can’t understand her now. Can I catch her before we move on with this conversation?”

“But she’s just a pipsqueak pixie!” Danni scoffed. “Why would we need her?”

“Well you’re a loud-mouthed pain in the ass and Alistair is a stuffy pig-headed bastard, and I keep you two around.”

“Hphm!”

“I resent your opinion of me highly.”

Lauren took out a PokéBall and tapped it on the fairy’s head.

“My name is Phoebe. I’m a Flabébé,” she explained to Lauren when she was let back out of the ball. “I’m sorry about what happened to your Vivillon. I hope he’s okay.”

“Frankly, I don’t think any of us care about him anymore.”

“Oh, that’s too bad.” Phoebe held tight to her flower. “I’m glad I could meet all of you. What are your names?”

They went through the introduction cycle and then went on their merry way towards the entrance to Lumiose City. (Lauren literally skipped.) They strolled along, carefree, thinking they had seen the last of the diabolical Mr. Flutters……………………………………………………………….

…………………………………………………………………………………...OR HAD THEY?!

Nah, he’s boxed for the rest of the game.

Welcome to the Kalos Twilight Zone! When I found out that Vivillon was #666, I just had to make Mr. Flutters the devil. I was only keeping him in my party because I knew he'd evolve fast and I wanted to see what pattern I would have (polar, in case no one caught it). I thought this was a fitting send-off for him. Oh, and because this will probably never be explained later on, I'll share this little tid-bit of information about Mr. Flutters: He became transfixed with Saff in particular because he wanted the soul of his unborn kid. By taking over the father, he felt he could get closer to the child. Remember how he got all cuddly with the egg during the celebration party? Yeah.

In conclusion, half of my team either hates each other or wants to kill each other. This is a great group I've got here. XD But what's this? There seems to be a mystery around little Phoebe. She... ugh, if I say anything, I'm going to spoil all. Let's just say I love her very very much.

I promise the next installment will be more upbeat and less... evil.
